The Ponte Scagligeri bridge in Verona glows warmly in the afternoon sun. Fluffy white clouds and cerulean skies reflect in the fast running river Adige encircling the Italian town. The grassy embankment leads the eye into the distance while a local fisherman fishes from the shallows.

I was born in 1941 in the Orkney Islands north of Scotland where my father was stationed in the air force. My mother was an artist and I spent my childhood years in North Wales with my maternal grandmother until the war was over when I was reunited with my mother in London.
