Early June morning with the Doges Palace seen from the island of San Georgio Maggiore. A gondolier rows out to get passengers and the pink facade of the palace reflects warmly in the clear green water of the canal. The Bridge of Sighs is visible to the right of the picture and a corner of St Mark's square on the left. The tall campanile and Venetian lion on its column have tourists walking past and pigeons flying above them. A memento of your trip to the Italian city

I was born in 1941 in the Orkney Islands north of Scotland where my father was stationed in the air force. My mother was an artist and I spent my childhood years in North Wales with my maternal grandmother until the war was over when I was reunited with my mother in London.
