wading birds are feeding in a dam fringed by tall rushes. In the distance is a rowing boat is suspended in the sky. A flamingo flies above and a flight of cormorants can be seen far off the coast. A pale crescent moon still hangs in the sky and scarlet bougainville overhangs the dam. Yellow and pink mesembryanthemums gleam in the mid-distance. A calm and peaceful day beckons for wildlife and humans on the west coast.

I was born in 1941 in the Orkney Islands north of Scotland where my father was stationed in the air force. My mother was an artist and I spent my childhood years in North Wales with my maternal grandmother until the war was over when I was reunited with my mother in London.
