A young mother stands on the grass by a sandy beach and looks towards the setting sun across a sea glittering with the sky's reflections. Her small daughter runs nearby clapping her hands with joy. A lone sailing boat drifts past the shoreline. We can imagine it is the holidays. Hadeda Ibis a South African bird dig their curved beaks into the lawn for their evening meal. A garden bed overflows with pink roses, white agapanthus and blue hydrangeas and varied green foliage. A dark leafless tree is silhouetted against the sea. This is a nostalgic scene reminiscent of childhood holidays long gone.

I was born in 1941 in the Orkney Islands north of Scotland where my father was stationed in the air force. My mother was an artist and I spent my childhood years in North Wales with my maternal grandmother until the war was over when I was reunited with my mother in London. In my twenties I studied painting at the Heatherley School in Pimlico, London, with Helen Wilson, Carl Cheek and David Ufland.
