The Langeberg range of mountains in the Western Province of South Africa are tipped with snow and their slopes glow pink in the morning light. In the fields below are farm buildings with cattle grazing. The water in a dam in the foreground reflects the mountain range and cerulean sky.

I was born in 1941 in the Orkney Islands north of Scotland where my father was stationed in the air force. My mother was an artist and I spent my childhood years in North Wales with my maternal grandmother until the war was over when I was reunited with my mother in London.
