Flowers and trees and a white wall and gateway. A sunny western Cape afternoon and the red, scarlet, yellow and white flowers in a border seen through an open gateway in the old manor garden. Sunlight dapples the grass through the leaves of surrounding trees and a cat pauses for a moment on the earthen path running across the scene. In the distance beyond a field of pale yellow stubble a blue haze of woodland sets a cool note to the painting. Different colours make up the white of the long wall both warm and cooler blues.

I was born in 1941 in the Orkney Islands north of Scotland where my father was stationed in the air force. My mother was an artist and I spent my childhood years in North Wales with my maternal grandmother until the war was over when I was reunited with my mother in London.
