Early morning on a deserted beach on the western side of the Cape Peninsula in South Africa. Sunlight bright on the white and pink sand and and straggly leafless seaside shrubs make up the foreground. In the middle distance a fishing boat releases a cloud of grey smoke from it's funnel.

I was born in 1941 in the Orkney Islands north of Scotland where my father was stationed in the air force. My mother was an artist and I spent my childhood years in North Wales with my maternal grandmother until the war was over when I was reunited with my mother in London.
