A seascape and townscape painted in Istanbul. The scene is the straits leading to the Black Sea from the Sea of Marmara. Many types of boats are making their way along the channel and the other side of Istanbul is in the distance with light red and yellow ochre walls and roofs of buildings surrounded by green trees. In the foreground people walk by the sea and admire the scene. An old man is seated on the promenade bench and to the left stands a tall pale grey lighthouse marking the channel. The sea breaks in foam on the rocks below and its water reflects the cerulean and cobalt sky in which huge clouds have developed. Colourful washing is put out to dry on a nearby barge and seagulls fly about over the scene.

My mother was an artist and I spent my childhood years in North Wales with my maternal grandmother until the war was over when I was reunited with my mother in London.
